Just Kids..

Yesterday I finished a beautiful book by Patti Smith called “Just Kids”. The last 30 pages made me cry, a lot. It’s one of those torn feelings of knowing what’s coming, but yet you are still overwhelmed by it’s presence.

It’s an autobiography of her youth, mainly surround her marriage to Robert Mapplethorpe. It wasn’t actually a ‘marriage’ – but more an artist and his muse. Their bond was exceptional, and devoted until the end.

For those who do not know, Mapplethorpe was a photographer in the late 70’s and 1980’s. He was mostly known for his controversial S&M and gay photography. However, he also photographed flowers and portraits. He was irreverent, unconventional, and fixated on being true to an artist lifestyle.

Patti and Robert were very much in love and found the beauty within each other. They critiqued, promoted and supported each other’s need for art in their daily lives. I can’t help but recommend this book to anyone who is willing to listen to me.

My Favorite Sins

I’m a poker. I mean I like to poke around and look at other peoples designs. I truly admire those who can produce items that are beyond my reach. I found some of those amazing works at the Festival of Sin! Here are some of my favorite sins.

This is actually a complete SET with poseballs and everything by Tableau Vivant. It’s moody, luxurious and completely menacing. I could only photograph a portion of the set because some of it is MESH. Sadly, that ship has not come in for me yet… *sighs* The outfit came together quickly, once I had laid out the prims. The Domme Skin, Medusa Necklace and Eclat unmentionables all seemed to fall into place.

set: Tableau Vivant. 7 Sins – Wrath
skin: las petite morte. domme skin
hair: Amacci. Paz – jet black
outfit: Eclat. Black Beauty
necklace: A:S:S deLuxe – Medusea (with Monroe Piercing)

Shoes and Eyes not from the Festival of Sin, but they are GOS and Poetic Colors – of course!

I fucking love this avie. Gilded put this together: the shape, body physics, and a gluttonous AO. It’s brilliant. I was thrilled that a designer went for the jugular with this sin. Brilliant. I matched it up with a pants and top from {K}Rea, who probably didn’t expect to be matched up with this avatar. Beauty meet Beast.

body: gilded. Hoss Shape & Physics
AO: gilded. AO
top: {K}Rea. Candy Pants, blackberry
bottom: {K}Rea. Stained Shirt, black

Donut and Drink are available in the GLUTTONY portion of the sim. Shoes are from Hoorenbeek and the Shaved Head is my own. The skin is DEN-DOU Eito ate the chocolate too much.

vanity and greed

When I loaded this pose set by Adorkable Peapod, I was thrilled. I couldn’t help but want to profile ALL the poses. Definitely worth picking up while you’re at the Festival. It was an easy match up with Adore & Abhor‘s dress and Dark Mouses‘ new jewelry set, but I had a hard time choosing a skin. I ended up with Amacci‘s Laine skin because, well, look at the tits! They don’t get much better than that.  I wish I had those melons in RL. *puts a pencil in between them*

pose collection: Adorkable Legs 1 thru 10
skin: Amacci. Laine, pruder clear cleavage
dress: Adore & Abhor. Gloria Dress
jewelry: Dark Mouse. Avidita Earrings & Bangle

Hair by boon, Shoes by Nardcotic and eyes by Kiwi.

I think everyone will find a special something in this Festival of Sin. It starts tomorrow, so be ready. I know I am!

Year In Review: Top 5 Blogs in 2011

There are so many lists out there of all the cool stuff you should buy in Second Life. All the top designers, shoe makers, skins, poses, blah blah blah. Well, what about the girls who spend their free time and money advertising all these beautiful things for YOU!

Whether you like it or not, bloggers are part of the equation. I wanted to share, because no one asked me to, some of my personal favorites.

NOTE: I do not know ANY of these people in Second Life or in real life.

Syra Hyun
This woman knows how to put some shit together and make it sing. She has a stunning eye for detail and beautiful composition in her photographs. They are totally works of art.  Also, if you look back at her beginning 2011 you can see how much she has developed her skills. She’s gotten more brash and bold about doing avant garde images and doesn’t seem afraid of anything you put in front of her.

Syra Hyun, Red Silk (12/6/11)

Flower Ducatillon
I really love that a majority of her Second Life images are on location. I think that is totally fantastic and sets the tone for her styles. Her choices are often go between the extremes of whimisical and dream-like. I very much enjoy the variety. Also, her avie shape is really pleasant to look at. She doesn’t have the downward turned lips and an alien-shaped head.

Flower Ducatillon, Finally Friday (10/11)

Dantelicia Ethaniel
Dantelicia’s work transcends all traditional SL fashion blogs. Her work is art. Pure and Simple. If you look at her flickr stream: you will see countless examples of the most beautiful images. She understands a woman’s body and it’s form in virtually any setting. Abstract to portrait, restrained to visceral… it’s a beautiful thing to admire.

Dantelicia Ethaniel, Karin.. (10/15/11)

Kex Blackheart
I call dark skinned beauties in Second Life “chocolate bears” because they are yummy and I wants to eats them up! (For the record, I call pale skinned avies “honkeys ” because it makes me laugh.) Kex is definitely a chocolate bear. She’s got a totally unique shape, fucking fantastic sense of design, and gorgeous portfolio of blog images. Sadly, she doesn’t blog that often – but when she does, she makes it worth your while. She’s unique and lovely, and I completely admire that.

Kex Blackheart, Fly Girl In Living Color (12/10/2011)

Brie Wonder
Brie’s latest post blew my socks off when I first set eyes on it. Only a few days ago, the simplicity of it all seemed so elegant and jarring at the same time. What is the woman doing there with all the camera equipment around her? Why is she in her panties? It reminded me so much of how Degas would compose his paintings. Juxtaposed to infer a story, without actually telling it. I’ve got my eye on Token Chic.

Brie Wonder, among the cut (12/29/11)

I hope you dig the names I’ve mentioned and maybe discovered their beauty too! It was such a pleasure to go through each set of images for a year and watch the progress unfold. Anyways, this is just one gal’s opinion on something special in Second Life. Happy New Year.

The Two Fridas

para que quiero pies si tango alas para volar” – Frida Kahlo

I feel like shit today. In my real life, we have been redecorating the living room. This translates to painting, moving furniture, building cabinetry and all around contortions of your body that leave you wrecked and aching. Fucking hell.

The body ache I feel reminds me of Frida Kahlo. I wrote several papers on her in the college. The last one was comparing her to Marcel Duchamps work. Frida represented blood, desire, hunger, lust, and all the messy passionate emotions that plague us as humans. Duchamp depicted a much more abstract mechanical interpretation of these emotions. One artist lays all her cards on the table, the other masks them in whimsey and innuendo.

The Two Fridas, 1939, Oil on canvas. Collection of the Museo de Arte Moderno.

Anyone who has ever known me would probably guess that I’m more of a Frida girl. They would be right. I find innuendo and manipulation to be too complex for me. I never really learned my ways around it, thru it, and translated into the proper meaning. It’s like that with swearing. “Fuck” is the perfect word to convey emotion directly and without any other meaning. Some people find it crass, and I have even been “written up” as a designer for my language. I just find it clear.

*thinks about it*

The thing with clarity, it’s not for everyone.
