This morning the AP Wire reported that South Korean beauty Daul Kim was found hanged in her Paris apartment. She was the golden haired Asian model that broke your heart in a single glance. Recently, her credits included Christopher Kane’s Topshop, modeling for i-D magazine, British Vogue, and the fall issue of Dansk.
The news reports seem to be “pinning” the blame on South Korean culture. AP News cites, “South Korea — which has the highest suicide rate among the 30 nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development..”
However, I feel maybe we should be looking at the modeling industry itself. This isn’t the first model suicide to hit the papers in recent months. Kazakhstan’s Ruslana Korshunova passed away this summer by plummeting to her death from her SoHo apartment window. The NY Medical Examiner ruled it a suicide much to the dismay of her family.
I wonder if these girls were getting any mental health treatment, they so desperately needed? Their entire world built around appearance, surely that would seriously fuck with their head. It gets to ME and I am just an average Jane.
If you read through Daul Kim’s blog, there seem to be signs that her depression was definitely present. Let me be clear, therapy is therapy. Sometimes, therapy doesn’t work alone. Depression and many mental illnesses need to be treated through pharmaceuticals. Just like diabetics, sometimes you just need medication to help you with your illness and it cannot be circumvented.
However, a majority of SSRIs and other drugs fuck with your weight. Sometimes you gain, sometimes you lose, sometimes the drug isn’t right and you have to try another version. In all accounts, it wreaks havoc on your body. So, for models this would be exponentially more detrimental to not only themselves – but their livelihood.
So does that help explain why these girls are dying? I don’t know. I don’t know if Miss Kim or Miss Korshunova were on any medication. I don’t know much except what I read in the media about their lives. However, I do know firsthand about mental illness and depression. I know there is treatment in place to stop this shit from happening. However, I don’t know WHY the modeling industry isn’t doing a fucking thing about it.
